Worriedaboutsatan – Arrivals [Gizeh Records]

It’s finally here Worriedaboutsatan’s album Arrivals has landed, in your record store on the 25th May. They have been working on it for a year or more now and if you’re a regular reader you’ll maybe remember previous posts on the demos and rough mixes of album tracks that they sent over. But now the finished article is here in its full glory.

Arrivals is a slight departure in sound to previous material the take their beloved ambient post-rock electronica roots and squeeze in their love for minimal techno with truly wonderful results. Electronica and post-rock have long had a relationship but post-rock and minimal, well it’s a new one. The two are joined together effortlessly by Gavin and Tom of Worriedaboutsatan with a subtle pallet of sounds and enchanting song writing.

The album flows effortlessly from one track to the next with the help of small dot named segments of the title track ‘Arrivals’ along with tannoy samples announcing tweaked and freaked coded messages to passengers. Opening track ‘One Down’ really sets the scene, from out of the blue you get bright pads and a gentle build into a big bass drop that loops and draws you in. The only track with a vocal of sorts ‘Evil Dogs’ is a killer track with a dubbed out atmosphere that opens into some beautiful yet sad chords like a minimalist classical piece being tweaked into ambient shape. The beats and bass tones really do propel this one forward as the ghostly vocals swoop in a high and beautifully subtle falsetto taken through a bed of effects.

It’s good to see ‘Pissing About’ didn’t get a name change since the demo stage, plus it’s a monster of a track in a Luciano meets Mono kind of way. The pulsing bass rings out loud and clear over a minimal kick and energetic jacking arpeggios that get tweaked and dubbed out as ambient soundscapes make for a dreamy background. ‘History Is Made At Night’ is in a similar vain but a lot more subtle, glitchy and organic; it’s an undisputed highlight. The way the hook blips and flips into action against the huge kick drum and baseline is sublime.

The delicate guitar ballad ‘You’re In My Thoughts’ is a beautiful melancholic number full of melody. The synth lines and bowed guitar build in layers to create a real sense of hope and subdued joy. Then when it builds it turns into something else all together. The way the beats are slightly industrial and skippy remind me of early SAW era Aphex Twin especially with the subtle and moving chords playing above.

The subtle almost drone like ambient track ‘All Things But You Are Silent’ makes good use of guitars and whooshes with a gentle build up of electronics. It’s a wicked transition to the album closer, ‘Arrivals’ which maybe without noticing you’ve been hearing bits of here and there throughout your journey so when it kicks off you get a feeling like you’ve been here before yet all at once you’re somewhere new. It’s a wonderful track that builds subtly with sampled vocals and violin like sounds and bows on guitars before glitches and bass take you deep, it’s mesmerising. There is a real sense that you’re home from a journey, the vibe is weary yet comfortable and somehow joyous in a slightly melancholy way.

Arrivals is a wicked album and Worriedaboutsatan really do have potential to crossover by joining some post-rock and alternative guitar music fans with the electroinica and minimal crowds. This idea is further enforced by the band dropping a second CD full of remixes, from the likes of P45 and Marco Zenker with the limited addition release of the record.

John Tejada – Fabric 44

Minimal and techno have been around for what seems like an age now and come to think of it so has John Tejada and Fabric. Even when sometimes as with all genres over time a formula starts to appear, Tejada has always managed to stay fresh and skip around tempos and styles at will as a DJ and producer. So a full mix from him in the excellent Fabric series is an interesting prospect.

John takes tracks new and old from all over the genre and mixes them with a hell of a lot of his own productions and material from his label Palette. This gives the mix a really cohesive sound that is unmistakably Tejada.

The mix opens with subtle and musical Detroit vibed minimal techno that builds with lush pads and creaking synth tweaks. It’s pretty hypnotic stuff for the most part but you can snippets of what’s to come as a sort of jacking European electro sound creeps in.

There is a warm timeless feel to a lot of the tracks here, it sounds like it could be mixed at anytime since techno’s inception in the 80s. It’s got all those lush, melancholic soul feelings that the early stuff had but with a really contemporary electro or minimal undertone. I guess it’s just quality in the end.

Some of the stand out tracks for me are the more subtle minimal affairs, such as the simple yet effective, ‘WAX10001’ by WAX. It just pumps along with drums not to dissimilar to old Trax On The Rocks material from Daft Punks Thomas Bangalter. But instead of kind of looped out funk vibe there is a nice dub synth hook that makes you want to move. Another track from the same label Hardwax also makes my ears prick up in the mix, this one by EQD called ‘Equalized001’ it has a similar kind of tone.

The tracks from Palette All-Stars pick the pace of the mix up a little and take it into freaked out acid state of mind with a growling bottom end and those mad acid tweaks that techno does so well.

Throwing in the Orbital classic ‘Fahrenheit 303’ is a nice touch as not only had I not heard it in a long time but it gives the mix a really old skool euphoric rave feel, which is never a bad thing.

Apparently Tejada heavily edited a lot of these tracks to make the Fabric mix a more solid flowing piece of work compared to his in club mixing. He wanted it to come across as a whole. I think he achieved this very well indeed. By the time your half way through you really locked into the vibe of it all and ready to get taken where ever Tejada feels, and he doesn’t disappoint with the final third which is maybe the best. Tejada himself with Arian Leviste kill it with the subtle raver ‘Forbiden Planet’ before a nice Shed remix brings it down a bit in his own wonderful dubbed out style.

Fabric mixes are always quality and John Tejada really doesn’t disappoint, grab this if you’re a fan of the more subtle end of electro, techno and minimal. I doubt very much you will be disappointed.

Skull Disco – Soundboy Punishments

This collection is getting on a little bit now, but I’m a little late to the older Skull Disco stuff I only have the 12”s: 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 so far. I think they are only going to drop one more official 12”, which will have four Shackleton tracks on it, then maybe some white labels and another Soundboy Punishments compilation. What an amazing label it has been, Shackleton has been making some seriously good music that spans quite a few genres and maybe even invented the minimal/techno/dubstep hybrid along with Villalobos and Appleblim. Appleblim’s tracks on this compilation are good but I think they pale in comparison to Shackletons, Appleblim has come along way since these early tracks though as the newer 12” will show as will the next Soundboy comp no doubt. Gatekeeper also features here on one track, as does the aforementioned Villalobos in his huge mix of Shacks Blood On My Hands more on that in a bit though.

Shackleton’s tracks are out of sight they are that good his minimalist approach with polyrhythmic African drumming and huge basslines mix so well to make some of the darkest and most exciting music I have heard in a while. You can see why Villalobos asked to remix Blood On My Hands, as he just loved it so much. Shack isn’t keen on being described as dubstep and to be honest his sound is pretty far removed from that scene’s sound and tempo that it is a kind of genre of it’s own. Appleblim on the other hand sounds pretty dubstep esspecialy in comparison to the other work on the comp; the first CD is Shackleton’s organic groves juxtaposed against Appleblim’s techy and almost jungle sounds. Both artists have matured since this compilation and are ready to move onto new ventures, but as long as I get to here their tunes I will be happy even if it means no more Skull Disco.

The art work by Z is fantastic as it is will all Skull Disco releases it reflect the sound so well with its skeletal bone wrenching dark and deep sound that’s all at once organic and not from this earth at the same time.

Disc two is slightly more dance floor influenced Shackleton makes most the tracks and really breaks loose in the most dubstep style stuff he has on this comp. The huge bongo patterns are still in full effect but it’s all at a faster passed and almost 2-step rhythm to make you move your feet. And of course the bass is still huge. Ricardo Villalobos’ mix of Blood On My Hands is on this disc I really love it and it pretty much got me into looking at Dubstep, but after hearing the original mix I think I prefer that, just. Villalobos makes it an epic deep and dark minimal masterpiece though and for that I salute him. Skull Disco Soundboy Punishments is a brilliant retrospective collection of tracks from their vaults, I look forward to the last few 12” very much and another one of these, before Appleblim and Shackleton move on to new things.

Kontext – Falling To Weightlessness / Aeromonarchs Attacks / Plumes / Blinkende Stjerne 2x12” EP

This is a fantasitic EP spread over 2 12” on Immerse Records and their little moto is, ‘breakbeat and sub culture’ this sums up the sound quite nicely. The first 12” is a high tempo yet laid back dubstep beauty but with the most minimal influenced sound I have heard yet. The drum sounds, bloops and crackles are right out of the minimal techno cannon of sounds. This is mixed with some deep bass and tech driven sounds to make an irresistible dubstep/minimal crossover. Aeromonarchs Attacks showcases this sound brilliantly on the AA side of 12” 1. As does it’s flip side Falling To Weightlessness with huge bass ringing through it and a kind of 2-step minimal sound to the drums.

The second 12” of the two is an even more laid back affair with slowed down tempo’s to about 90 bpm so around half that of dubstep and lots less than minimal, into ambient dubtronica territory here. Plumes starts with some epic tech dub sounds and builds with some clicky bongo loops and a kick drum in 4x4. Blinkende Stjerne has a fantastic sounding bass sound that moves up and down in a hypnotic fashion while the beats boogie along like some kind of minimal monster and even whips out a four to the floor kick.

Each 12” is brilliant and brings a nice sound to the table the first will get some huge spins in dubstep sets and the second will get played in minimal sections or maybe even pitched to fit dubstep. MinimalDubTekronica…

Move D & Benjamin Burnn – Songs From The Beehive

This album is sublime each tune is pure epic minimal grooves that take in many different influences from as far away as ambient music to acid house. I have been holding off from reviewing it for a while as I have just been enjoying it too much. Every song is so hypnotic and builds for so long some times you don’t hear that techno four to the floor beat for a good five minuets into the tune. Loop after loop layers up and twists into a big epic patchwork not unlike some of the music GAS has done. Then the pumping drums come in and take it to new dance floor heights. This music can work just as well at home and in the clubs, with some clever mixing and tune selection. There are only seven tunes on Songs From The Beehive but each one clocks in at quite some length.

The first track Love The One You’re With has a beautiful ambient loop that plays throughout and the beat melts in and out of this while acidic synths make a groove for your feet and brain. There is something a little Aphex Twin about it but not quite it seems warmer and friendlier, there isn’t as much sadness either. Velvet Paws follows on from the opener with a cushion of fuzzy bleeps and sweeping pads. It’s a bit dubby this one the building rhythms echo around in a soup of reverb. When the beat really kicks in its quite electro sounding and the bass motif that accompanies it really gets in your head for that hypnotic feel. A late night or deep sunshine haze is very prominent on Songs From The Beehive, I can’t decide when would be best to play it, either in a sun set mix in Ibiza or really late at night. Honey is maybe the stand out track here it has a wicked deep echoy acid riff and a pumping drum beat. It’s the most balls out everyone to the floor techno acid stomper on the album to, why I haven’t got it on 12” yet is a mystery to me. The synth pads then melt into a beastly acid line in the mid section that will really get things going. Like A Restless Sea is one of the shorter tracks yet it is still damn atmospheric and epic sounding. An underwater vibe adds to the distant electronic growl to make it a very pretty tune indeed. Come In is another low down dubby number with a great bubbling synth section on top of hypnotic beats. Mothercorn is the penultimate track, deep spaced out sounds fill the air around you with this one, it’s pretty irresistible. Radar is the final tune and its an epic one clocking in at over twenty minuets worth of beautiful ambient loops it really has space to develop and breath. When the beat finally comes in some time after five minuets or so the tune really picks up and comes into its own.
Move D & Benjamin Burnn have created a really cracking album that is beautifully deep and hypnotic while banging all the right techno and minimal boxes all at once.

The Field Live at Berghain, Berlin.

Berghain is hailed as one of the best clubs around and maybe even the capital of Techno in recent times. The minimal gods and goddesses descend upon this Berlin hangout like chic party monsters ready for the legendary Berlin nightclub scene to engulf them in sparse beats until the early hours and beyond. Of course I have never been to this place, I’m just guessing, I have made it sound fun though haven’t I…

I had been unsure on whether to get myself the Field album From Here We Go Sublime since last year. At first I wasn’t convinced at all, the loops just got annoying and it all seemed a little too simple, I guess you can say I just didn’t get it. This has changed and the reason why is this live set a seamless mix recorded from the soundesk of Berlins
Berghain.

Kompakt’s techno Swede plays 53 minuets of his own looped out mellow beats and soundscapes, at least I’m pretty sure its all The Field’s work I can’t find a track list anywhere. Its smooth yet beautiful, not the kind of techno to kick your ass all over the dance floor but the kind of stuff you can fall asleep to if the mood takes you. I’m sure in a club this set would make you move and want to dance with pretty girls with all your best minimal European house moves, and drinking strange cocktails. But lets face it we are stuck at home or on a bus with this mp3 to listen to, and it works just as well, well almost, I guess…

KeToLoCo

KeToLoCo is the ace club night from Leeds that started as a mad after party for BacktoBasics in some random basement. They soon outgrew that and have been doing nights all of the spot ever since in Leeds, London and even the last few years they have taken Ibiza by storm. I still haven’t got my ass to one of these nights as I’m rubbish, but one day I will and in the meantime they have posted a few mixes from their facebook group and they are rather wicked. The Mole – As High As The Sky

Spaced out techno with a funky as hell tech driven minimal tone that even veers towards the loopy disco and acid sound from time to time. The Mole is a Canadian artist on Wagon Repair Records, who have released Mathew Johnson and Monologue to name but a few. As High As The Sky is one hell of a good record.

The thing that makes it stand out from other techno releases I have heard in a while is the drums, they are all pretty much live sounding and organic. They have a rolling disco feel to them; they have a crunch. I can hear a bit of Homework era Daft Punk in a few tunes. Some may even say they are some Jacking beats, a Chicago flavour can be heard in some places. This kind of sound has been lost in minimal and tech driven stuff for a while, and its done really well here.

The sound pallet is pretty diverse and it really keeps you hooked. It all sounds a bit like a DJ set and a great party all at once, each track bringing something new to the night and slaying the floor. The stand out tracks are: Still In My Corner, which is a brilliant slow burner with fat electro bass and bongo loops, kind of like really slow minimal techno by the likes of Mathew Dear. Alice, You Need Him with its tweaty high pitched synth loop that pings through your mind and is very infectious. The midsection of Hey Girl (I Fell So Good) & Baby, You’re The One (Edit) remind me of Daft Punk Homework era a lot with their filtered funk disco loops. Like The Way is a treat with its looped vocals and techy deep flow. The pads and ghostly spoken loop give off a sad and mellow atmosphere that reaches its peak as the song slows its pace and mellows to its end. Smiling Not Running has a addictive bass line with some acidic tweaks thrown in for good measure. Knock Twice has another ace baseline but this time a lopped funk number which is accentuated by its twangy funk guitar line. The closer When It Tastes So Good You Deserve It is a wicked spacy tune with a slow digital bass that fades in and out while floaty jazz pings proliferate around you. This culminates in a very mad and strange ending which made me smile…

The whole album is a joy to listen to from beginning to end, it’s not to banging and it isn’t to dark either. As High As The Sky has just a hint of mellowness and a whole heap of warmth. Its like your floating in space but in your favourite cosy blanket. Pure dance floor joy executed with precision and style.

Minilogue – Animals

More from the minimal camp now, this album is a mix and an original artist album all at once on Sven Vath’s Cocoon label. Minilogue bring a vast number of styles to Animals from atmospheric chilled out stuff to prime time minimal. There are some beautiful bass sounds and warm feeling throughout. Minilogue are a joy to listen to each tune draws you in close and takes the whole album forward as a whole.

We build to Hitchhiker’s Choice, which is a nice acid style, bleepy, tech number that builds the first section of CD one well. The idea of an artist album that is also a mix really appeals to me in this day and age where much of what some people listen to is a single or some tracks from albums. Animals is a journey over two discs and benefits from this style. There are some pretty funky tunes on here too, some of it reminds me of old Detroit techno with the 808 drum machines. Loud, is an ace slice of minimal almost electro sounding tune, that builds its tight groove into a warm and slow dance floor wiggle. The strings that tease its self in and out before dropping into the next track are beautiful. This could well be a perfect soundtrack to the summer, when the sun comes down whip out the Minilogue, set up a stereo outside and have a BBQ. 33000 Honeybees makes me think this especially with its bird noise loops and bubbling acid baseline, which starts to build us slowly to a crescendo, I love Acid! Minimal techno is starting to get some really good full albums with Ellen Alien’s Sool and this being released this year alone. Minimal is such a visceral musical style each tweak and glitch awakens the senses, the mist subtle of noises can raise a smile and get you moving. The tune Jamaica is pretty much an anthem for the minimal dance floor. The bubbles and tweaks build to something damn special. With fat synth groves and killer drums. View Of A Juggling Ball, Giant Hair Super Monster and Hypnotized are amazing pieces of acid drenched freaked out wobblers that make the second half of the first CD a joy to behold. The title track Animals is such a great tune; it has intensity and a synth hook to die for. It twists and freaks out in such wonderful ways. This is deconstructed beautifully into the final track on CD one. Yes that’s right that was just CD one and its already very impressive. In A Distance brings it to a close with a brooding minimal track. Now for the flip side, bring on CD two.

The next phase of the journey Minilogue take us on is an even more beautiful atmospheric leg to close the trip. The drones of sweet sound ease us in with gentle chimes and sweeps. Some mellow heart beats wind their way through the tapestry. Minimal ticks are present but less frequent and spaced out. In some ways it reminds me of an up to date version of KLF’s Chillout album. We are treated to some more organic sounds and traditional instruments on CD two as well Six Arms And One Leg has guitar and maybe even double bass loops. Bird song even flickers through: and a voice talking about floating and trees. Its all still pretty bright sounding we don’t head towards Murcof (see other posts for Murcof review) style dark space and time. The percussion is beautiful and many of the tracks feed off the rhythms. Although CD two of Animals is ambient in nature it still works well as a minimal piece of work and even stretches the genre a little wider. Jazzy high hats proliferate In The Shade Of The Sun, which is a standout ambient track. It’s not unlike an old tune on the Cold Cut Journeys by a DJ mix with all the horses in it, well minus the hours. In The Shade Of The Sun comes to a close with the most delicate twangs of a lonesome guitar as warm and friendly synths fade in, so beautiful. A three part track segment comes in called Stations I, II and III. There are some good looped noisey yet subtle parts in here. The beat-less portions are something to behold. There really is something for everyone here if you like minimal and like to chill out some time after Animals is a treat. I think I have gushed enough about this now if you read this far well done, and you must love the album as much as I do or should really grab a copy soon.

Minilogue even have some mixes to download on their website

Genoud – Mobius

More Minimal greatness from Igloo, This may even top the fantastic Seph - Goust EP. Mobius is really subtle, warm and techy. With really wet sounds like drops and plops, the cover art might hint at this. Each song is a real treat hypnotic and inventive. The double header Possing A Theory, which is split into a Plan A and a Plan B is pretty special B is the dub version of A and its super hypnotic and warm, like an underwater dance floor. The track Aun no es tiempo, is a beautiful piece I can’t get enough of it. Enjoy it for your self by clicking the link below.

Genoud – Mobius IN018 can be found in the net-releases section.

Seph – Goust

This is a free net release from Igloo an IDM and Minimal record label from Argentina. Goust is an eight track EP of Minimal Techno that really hits the spot. The title track has a subtle groove with woops and bleeps riding the low bass. The drums are tight and punchy. It doesn’t build too much but does work well as a DJ tool. Vitrios the second track as an evil sounding Minimal groove, the bass is especially evil. The breakdown is a freaky click out with what sounds like some one rubbing a finger over a shiny surface. Then ups the intensity a little before pouring shattered glass over you for another break. Dust Chords is maybe my favourite track on here the drums are excellent and the bass plays well with the rhythms. There are also wonderful warm synth pad sample loops, cut up to good effect to create the melody. Vamp is a slightly more aggressive number that again brings the evilness. With disjointed pianos and a hard-hitting fast tempo. The bass is really phat on Vamp and the higher register synth bleeps add some nice tension. There is a nice bubbling Acid undertone to this track as well. Monstruitt, has a growling intro, and mad scrapes before the bass drum kicks in. These layer up and elements are added until they are all playing there own part in a alien groove. Tangoc; has a really warm bass line and plucky little synth line. Espectros (feat. Dilo) is pretty scary with breathy vocals at the beginning before a wet squelch appears and echoes around, and then enters a deep sub bass. Ghostly and brilliant, the groove grows and takes you with it. Each track has micro precision and good execution. The final tune is a remix of the title track Goust by Someone Else. The bass drum actually blows air at you from the speakers. The sub bass helps things along nicely too. The clicks, blips and noise add something to the original track and make it a banger. I’m no Minimal expert but Seph’s Goust EP hits the spot for me. I’m sure there is more to come from Igloo too.

Ricardo Villalobos – Fabric 36

Villalobos has been a favourite of mine ever since I lay my hands on his 12” of ‘What You Say Is More Than I Can Say’ in 2006. That tune opened my eyes to a wider spectrum of dance music and the minimal scene, which I had only been vaugly familular with by listening to Ritchie Hawtin mixes and thinking wow what is this stuff.

The Fabric mix serries has some gems in it yet this one stands out, as it is also a full artist album. Villalobos has decided to make a mix of entirley new matterial made by him and featuring some colaberations. This strikes me as a brilliant idea on how to showcase new music. Its also a nice way to stop people from stealing the tunes and mixing them them selves. This keeps Villalobos’ music exclusive and makes his live appearences more of an event. Pretty clever stuff.

If you have herd Villalobos before you knid of know what to expect, really warm sounding minimal grooves, expertly blended seamlesly for amaizing effect. He takes influences from all over the world and slips them into a techno tapestry. There are ellemnts of Jazz drums and at one point a whole folk song re-made into a peak time minimal party anthem. The whole mix is a joy to behold with some wonderful builds and twists. If I had to pick a standout track it would be the centre piece ‘Andruic & Japan’ by Richardo Villalobos & Andrew Gillings. This track groves along nicley until a break down coems in which explodes with samples of Japanes drumming. The ryhthems realy hit hard and build to a cresendo then when the beat drops again the drum samples are choped up to fit the 4 x 4 house drum beat again, its an exciting moment.
A supurb tallent on the decks and in the studio, What will Ricardo Villalobos do next, I for one can’t wait to see.

Ellen Allien - Sool

Sool is the lattest offering from Ellen Allien, I'm not to familular with her work before this, apart from the odd track in mixes. I've had a sneeky listen to this record, which I beleave is released in May. Its super minimal in places with some atmospheric sections and some dance floor bangers. Sool works as a whole unlike some dance albums. There are sexy breathy vocals looped into the mix of some tunes that add a really nice female touch that is missing from sme minimal stuff. I really like the track Sprung with its clangy honcking synth hook then fat bass drum kick, which builds and builds with some ouble kicks and other percussion, then drops some atmospheric pads in snipets. all these tunes are really minimal and not affraid to admit it. Elphine is maybe my favourite track on Sool, its a quirky number with an ace bass line and old school sounding drum kick and beautiful vocal loops that echo around you. The peccusion is spot on and clicky too, its real dance floor beast. The edits really make it to with suden yet subtle builds with tiney whistles, echoes and loops, before that bass kicks in again. Truley wonderful. The song Its sounds to me like the Jaws theme in a minimal techno style, which is no bad thing and reminds me of a Ritchie Hawtin 12" I have from the 90's. Its a delight to listen to if your in a dark moody minimal state of mind. I need to dig into this scene more I'm to out of touch with this wonderful music. It's some of the most exciting stuff happening in dance since acid house and techno came about.
