BSM 09 Collection

News from one of my favourite labels:

Big Scary Monsters have launched their our '2009 Collection', a series of four compilation CDs featuring new, rare, unreleased, live and remixed tracks from the BSM roster. Each CD is limited to just 365 date stamped copies and will be released seasonally, with the Spring Collection kicking things off in February. The compilations will be sold separately for £5 each or you can subscribe (via
www.bsmrocks.com) to the whole series for £15 and receive a free collectors edition tin to hold all of the discs (photos coming soon), as well as other gifts and promotions through the course of the year.

Spring, The first in the series, is now available to pre-order and features 14 tracks including Mimas performing a wonderful cover of This Town Needs Guns hit, '26 Is Dancier Than 4', who return with 'Japanese Ultra Violence', a track which is previously unreleased in the UK. Other highlights include a massive dance remix of Pulled Apart By Horses, an exclusive album demo from Blakfish (as well as a track featuring members of the band singing a 'lounge' medley of Tubelord songs down the phone!), a brilliant old demo recording from Meet Me In St Louis, album/EP tracks from new boys Copy Haho, Wintermute and The Tupolev Ghost and loads more. As an added bonus, there are also two live videos including PABH and Blakfish playing some massive covers at a house party back in December. Most of these recordings won't be found anywhere else.

When purchasing/subscribing, let us know your preferred date and we'll do our best to stamp your CD(s) accordingly. The 'Summer Collection' will be released in May so look out for news and tracklistings for that one nearer the time at

Sounds a bit cool huh?

Big Scary Monsters Autumn Collection Sampler

The Monsters spank out another one of their excellent samplers for the Autumnal season this time. Get yourself over to http://www.bsmrocks.com/ and get it on the download it’s totally free and features some awesome artists.

This Town Needs Guns: Well I have talked alot about these guys recently after seeing them live and reviewing their album Animals for this very blog and 3barfire. All you need to know is they have to be heard…

Tubelord: They are a wicked band that just keep getting better with every release and the new tracks I heard them play live not so long ago where crackers. BSM are releasing a tasty 7” of theirs. Oh yeah they make a mad punky, poppy, deranged sound that makes you want to move in strange ways.

Pulled Apart By Horses: I was thinking just the other month when I saw these guys supporting That Fucking Tank and Dananananaykroyd in Leeds that I wish someone would pick them up and release some stuff. Then low and behold I find out one of my favourite labels Big Scary Monsters did just that; the new 7” is going to drop soon it’s called Meat Balloon and the artwork looks pretty damn hot too.

Mimas: I’m not very well versed on what Mimas are like apart from the excellent video I got hooked up with not long ago that featured some sexy sock puppet action along with a wicked song.

Native: I’ve really not heard of these guys but they are apparently BSM’s new favourite band so I will have to give them a good listen hey after that endorsement.

Grab it now for free and check out the rest of the stuff on BSMrocks too they have a wicked set of podcasts to download along with a nice roster of artists to check out. I do enjoy reading the blog too...

Tellison, Tubelord & Ghosts in the Intercom @ The Junction, York, 28th July 2008

It’s a Monday night not much going down round my way, so why not go see a little Tubelord I say. I enjoy their melodic, pop, indie, rock, spazz tunes quite a lot. I had only heard Tellison by name pretty much, but that name suggested metal to me, but a quick look on the myspace soon told me I was wrong. They make some pure power pop indie rock that is both catch and has some inventive flourishes. Ghosts in the Intercom are some local kids as far as I can tell, they might be onto something if they keep tryin’.

Ghosts in the Intercom start proceedings with some kind of hardrock, indie stop start musical journey. I can’t remember a single tune of theirs but the sound has potential and if they practice and get some wicked tunes, they could be a good band.

Tubelord are who I came for and they didn’t disappoint and even had some new tunes since I last saw them. I might be wrong here but I think they had a different bass player this time round and he looked a lot more comfortable and danced like a bastard. I enjoy Tubelord’s moves the lead singer, guitar dude, moves like an indie rock sex flamingo, grinding and on one leg, while smacking out the spazzed out riffs and I mean that in the best way possible of course.

Tellison surprised me and not only because I thought the name meant they were a metal band. They were solid and had plenty of wicked tunes, all be it in a kind of generic indie power pop kind of way, but still done well and with some inventive flourishes that brought them out of the pack a little. All the music was new to me and I couldn’t really hear the lyrics so have no idea what they are about or indeed what many of the tunes are even called, but they had some followers singing along. It was their first time playing York and they seemed to enjoy it and so did the crowd, not that the crowd was huge or anything it was a Monday night in a venue f’ing miles away from the centre of town. Good gig.

Tubelord – Feed Me A Box Of Words 7” & CDR

Tubelord are one of my favourite new bands, and one of the best live acts I’ve seen this year, a truly exciting addition to the Big Scary Monsters camp. This 7” single features Feed Me A Box Of Words on the A side and Obstacles on the flip. There is also the added bonus of getting a CDR with the two vinyl tracks and a extra one called Night Of The Pencils. The title track Feed Me A Box Of Words is a wonderful track of heavy indie pop. The drums and guitar are so energetic and funky; it’s a true joy to listen to. The vocals go from screaming to sweet high male parts, through to group chanting. It’s a very catchy number indeed. Not unlike a slightly more indie Meet Me In St Louis or At The Drive-In. There are many parts to Tubelord’s tunes each one a wonder to behold. I love it when they whip out the xylophone. The flip side Obstacles in the B side is another great tune in a similar vain, Tubelord don’t really do a bad tune out of the few I have herd live and on record each one is a corker. Night Of The Living Pencils is the sweetest tune of this bunch, they still rock pretty hard mind. The addition of a synth is ace too; it’s a dirty little number when it gets going. The youthful energy is something else on this single I can’t recommend Tubelord highly enough catch them live buy their singles and cross your fingers for an EP or album. In the mean time check them out on myspace where they even have some downloands for you.

Tubelord @ The Basment Bar, City Screen, York. 24th March 2008

This was a much quiter gig than I expected, the room was only half full. Tubelord wher by far the stand out band on the bill. They said it was one of their most laid back gigs but that didn't detract from their music at all. They have mellody and riffs coming out of their ears and a really infectious energy. They have a clean and tappy guitar sound that has a real edge to it. the rythem section is also tight as hell. It all makes you want to move. I look forward to more from these guys.
