Track by Track:

Ikonika – Direct [Hyperdub]
This girl can do no wrong right now, this is the flip side to her latest Hyperdub 12” and it comes on like a wonky, electro, Detroit techno monster with lush pads and bassy raw synths.

Untold – Yukon [Hemlock]
I love this first Hemlock 12” so much, I played the flip to this to death and put it in my last mix, which I shall link to at the end as well for anyone who missed it. It’s a deranged garage beast full of strange atmospherics.

D1 – Joy [Tempa]
Deep and soulful vibes from D1 here it reminds me of Balearic sunset parties and tech house, Beautiful stuff from a great and varied double EP on Tempa.

Ramadanman – Dayrider [Soul Jazz]
I can’t get this track out of my head with it’s slow vibe and mad 4 to the floor sections offsetting the beautiful melody twinkles. Ramadanman is one smooth operator.

Millie & Andrea – Black Hammer [Daphne]
This is a wicked 12” from two techno producers having a go at making Martyn style techno infused dubstep. I think they pull it off with style, the bass is pretty huge and it rolls along really nicely.

Pangaea – You & I [Hessle Audio]
Now this is one hell of a track, it’s the flip to the sublime Router but more on that a bit later. This could well be my favourite 12” of the year, pure rolling garage vibes with a soulful yet dark edge. Perfect!

Jack Sparrow – For Me [Earwax]
More future garage techno soul from Leeds (just like Ramadanman and Pangaea) there must be something in the water… again this reminds me of a sunset beach party, with people vibing out to house music.

D1 – Chocolate Orange [Dub Police]
Reggae dub style he from D1 I can’t get enough of the melancholic melodies and housey style. The drum patterns are so danceable it hurts.

Silkie – Skys The Limit [Deep Medi]
Deep Medi are running things right now, Silkie of the Anti Social crew smacks it with some seriously skipping and funky as hell dubstep. This is one hell of a sexy dance floor beast, with a euphoric rush.

LD – Swing Dat Skirt [Ringo Recordings]
I love LD right now; his funky jungle vibes kill me. This is an old track from Ringo Recordings to wet my whistle for grabbing a ton of his new 12” soon. The mixing was a bit rushed here and the sound a bit quiter on LD’s tune after Silkie but fuck it hey!

TRG & Dub U – Harijouka [Tempa]
Colaberation stuff now from TRG and Dub U, this is only just reaching the shops after me playing it to death on Appleblim’s Dubstep Allstars Vol.6 from earlier in the year. I’m still no tired of it, everything is there the beat skips along with a punchy and funky rhythm and the bass is big and hypnotic.

Shackleton – Shortwave [Skull Disco]
Maybe my favourite track from the last ever Skull Disco 12” (if you exclude the remix package they just dropped). This is the usual top quality dark and rolling carnage from Shackleton, spacey loops of chattering voices and a monster bassline that kicks in about half way through plays off the electro drums perfectly. I take it into the darkness for a bit here people.

Jus Wan – Action Potential [Apple Pips]
Apple Pips business here, I only just got this 12” a few days before I made the mix and just had to put it in after caning it on the Appleblim Dubstep Allstars CD again. Massive bass and huge techno vibes that still grab me every time.

Pangaea – Router [Hessle Audio]
Perfect track in almost everyway, there is soul, heart and darkness all rolled into one with Router. The spooky detached soul vocal samples tug at your heart strings while the future garage vibes just roll along and make you move. Enjoy the blissful tones of Pangaea.

Quest – Stand [Deep Medi]
If that last track wasn’t enough I decide to drop Quest on you, I just had to play this epic beast all the way through with minimal interference. The breakdown kills me every time, it’s got that balearik style to it again but with a funky slowed down half step dub thing going on instead of skipping house style. Close your eyes for this one…

Likhan’ – Qumran [7even]
An epic techno style dub mix out of Quest all the way from about half of the breakdown as I felt it didn’t interfere to much and played off it really well with the mellodie and a bit of extra bass. I can’t get enough of 7even I was gutted I didn’t fit F’s recent 12” into this mix.

Breakage – Untitled [Digital Soundboy]
Massive production from D’n’B maestro Breakage, the bass is immense and the drums are just huge techno rollers. The melodies and soulful sample from Nina Simone work perfectly. One of my favourite producers right now has to be Breakage.

Shortstuff – Never Mine [Berkane Sol]
This whole 12” blows me away, I could only choose one side for this mix though so Shortstuff won. Never Mine is a beautiful flowing techno monster, the electronic squiggles get me every time. Plus it mixes into Peverelist so well.

Peverelist – Clunk Click Every Trip [Punch Drunk]
Now then what the hell can I say about this track! It’s maybe my favourite on here, which is one tough decision I can tell you that now. The bloop, bloop bloopbloop bloop bloop melody builds and builds befor dropping an epic techy string section that just blows my mind. Then when that has dropped out again it just keeps building again and into the same strings right at the end. Clunk Click Every Trip leaves you gagging for more of those sweet strings, I could have played this tune about 8 times in this mix. Peverelist has outdone himself on this one.

Ikonika – Millie [Hyperdub]
I had no idea how to come out of that last track smelling of roses so I just had to get wonky on all your asses and turn the mix up a notch to some freaky party style, off kilter mayhem. This is the flip to the sublime Direct I started the mix with, but this time it’s more in your face and bouncy. The bass is pure filth with 8-bit dirty blips and growls. She named the track after her cat, big up Ikonika!

Gemmy – Bass Transmitter [Punch Drunk]
More 8-bit grime wonk from Punch Drunk Peverelist’s label this time in the form of Gemmy, Jokers mate from Bristol. His tracks are addictive and sound massive, I have no idea what he makes them on but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a Sega Mega Drive and Fruity Loops or something basic and mad like that.

Rustie – Tempered [Kapsize]
I almost put Joker from the flip of this here instead but I was just felling Rustie’s Dirty South aquacrunk beats more at the time. This has that boom of Southern US Hip-Hop like no other track around right now, well apart from the flip, which is Joker & Rustie on Play Doe. Rustie at 140 bpm always gets me going.

Scuba – Twitch (Jamie Vex’d Remix) [Hot Flush]
The final track had to be a bit of a strange anthemic type of beast and as I didn’t think I had time to drop Zig Zag by Rustie I plumped for Jamie Vex’d and his remix of Scuba. It’s the hugest sounding wonky thing around and really addictive with it.

So there you go another mix from me I hope you enjoy it as much as have making it.

If you missed them the first time grab my two other Dubstep style mixes bellow:

Large Hadron Collider (Double Vox Bass Tube Mix) by Jimi The Exploder Feat. MC. Prof. Brian Cox (ex D:Ream): The scribbles

I said I would write about the tracks on this mix here and my original post here, and to be honest I got distracted. But here we go, plus it’s a good excuse to bump the mixes profile a little more as I’m proud of it (so far I've had 147 downloads and counting of this mix)…

Kontex – Falling to Weightlessness [Immerse]

Kontex opens the mix in a fine deep and melodic style, I pitched this one up some what as it needed a bit more pace on it for dubstep’s 140 bpm trade mark speed. I can’t get enough of this double 12” on Immerse, Kontex has done some good work here in merging minimal / dub / dubstep / electronica and god knows what.

TRG & Dub U – Losing Marbles [Hot Flush]

I try and melt things smoothly into TRG & Dub U and you know what, I think I pull it off. These two have more beauties that will no doubt see the light of day in my next mix, but for now lets loose some marbles… It’s another deep one as is a lot of the LHC mix, I love the groove on this one though it’s so funky and driving yet subtle all at once.

Appleblim and Peverelist – Circling [Skull Disco]

Well what can you say about Skull Disco, Appleblim and Peverelist? A fuck load to be honest they are pushing things forward so much right now. Circeling is a triumph in rolling deepness, I love the bass on this and have done ever since I heard it on Dubstep Allstars Vol.6 with ‘blim. The second drop just kills it for me every time, make sure you listen out for that.

Grievous Angel – Lady Dub [Devotional Dubz]

Now for some deep spaced out R&B from the Angel from Sheffield, the bass on this is huge it’s like he has grabben an 808 and throttled the fucker until it popped. The smooth vocal samples and huge beats just make this some future garage / Nu-Soul cross over that is to die for. If you haven’t copped his mix that I posted the other day you really should. Also I suggested on dubstepforum that I would love to hear a Grievous Angel and Joker collaboration and he was very happy about that and would love to do something, I for one would love to hear that…

TRG – Generation (Breakage Remix) [Naked Lunch]

Breakage is one of my top tips right now, he comes from the D’n’B scene and is pushing a proper eyes down huge bass thing that is so big that it will no doubt blow air at you through even the shittiest of speaker systems. He mixes up TRG’s Generation is style here. I love the way the bass mixes with the Lady Dub’s bass before it, I can mix these two forever and be happy.

Martyn & Marcus Intalex – After Seven [Revolver]

Another D’n’B dubstep mix going on here, Martyn has been making drum’n’bass for ages and making waves recently in the dubstep scene with some soulful rollers of his own. He hooks up with D’n’B legend Marcus Intalex on this 12” and it’s pretty special to be honest. After Seven sounds like Detroit techno with hip-hop samples gone stepping for the afternoon, it’s some next level stuff.

Shackleton – Shortwave (Pole Remix) [Scape]

Pole goes stupidly deep on a mix for the one and only Shackleton, I think this one will make it onto the next Skull Disco collection. The original Shortwave is on the last ever Skull Disco 12” a label which I can’t big up enough. This mix sounds like a wired phone in radio show that has gone all wrong and been hooked up to an alien spaceship that is obsessed with bass.

Martyn – Storm Watch [Revolver]

This is the B-Side to the other Martyn track I played, the jazzy melodies works so well with the phone sounds that I just had to mix them. The piano and skipping beats are just perfect, that bassline really moves me as well. Martyn really is a bit of a talent worth keeping your eye on.

Untold – Walking Through Walls [Hemlock]

Untold has to be one to watch his tracks are brilliant. There are a lot of atmospherics in the tracks, it’s like he is twisting Burial’s ambient nighttime London sounds onto the dance floor. Hemlock is his own label and I expect some next level stuff to pop out on it in no time. Listen out for when I manage to knock the needle of the platter half way through, it got a bit of fluff snagged in it and I decided to blow it a bit to hard to get it off and the fucker skipped hard…

Starkey – Angel [Creative Space]

Starkey aka Stark Bot is a master of street bass and this tune is no exception. I have already reviewed this 12” on this very blog not to long ago if you search through the archives. It’s a subtle yet pumping number that moves the floor with plenty of melody, it’s not one of his massive bangers but I think it’s pretty special. His new album is so good expect a review of that soon.

Matty G – The 808 Bass [Argon]

Matty G brings the half step bass power to the mix, another US native just like Starkey, I thought I would bring them together and use this huge track as a bit of a breakdown considering I haven’t rolled with the half step yet in this mix. The 808 Bass is a big one a bit like Loefah doing hip-hop or something, the female vocal snippets work so well with Starkey’s tune too.

Cluekid – Monkey Style [Subbalicious]

This is a wicked pink 12” from Subbalicious it’s proper party time Jungle Step with a bassline that sounds like Super Sharp Shooter and that kind of era Jungle productions. The drums are what drew me to this though, it’s just pure hyper skipping 2-step meets jungle riddims. The flip by Chef isn’t half bad either, talking of Bad L.D. and Kode 9’s Bad is on a similar tip and will no doubt feature in my next effort of a mix…

TRG – Post Rave Blues Part 1 [Tube]

TRG again and the man from Romania drops another deep deep deep beast on us. It has subtle dub and reggae influences while keeping the party rolling on a garage and techno tip. The mixing here isn’t to hot but it works, I got this tune and the next in the post right before I recorded so I wasn’t to familiar but they just had to go in. TRG is the king of the floor, he moves your feet as hard as your mind.

Shackleton – You Bring Me Down (Peverelist Remix) [Scape]

Peverelist ripping up Shack, what more do you want to know really?!? Well it’s the flip top the Pole mix I played earlier and it’s just something else. The beats are some next level rolling techno infused stepping that bring a mad driving groove to the table. I decided to pretty much mix this from the edge as it’s so huge and the drums just phat as hell. Get ready for more Shackleton latter I just couldn’t keep an original bit of his away from this mix…

Mala – Bury Da Bwoy [DMZ]

Mala is a legend in dubstep terms, no-one touches him on deep, paranoid dance floor meditation, you can’t for love nor money get his early releases he is THE pioneer and I wish he would step up and kick everyone’s arse with an album or something. Bury Da Bwoy is maybe my favourite Mala track, it’s a perfect mix of dubstep and techno styles, which is what got me hooked in the first place. The drums are funky and off-kilter, the bass is huge and subtle while the groove just keeps on rolling.

Peverelist – Die Brucke [Punch Drunk]

More Pev now but this time an original production on his own label Punch Drunk, which you just have to look out for the man has taste as well as talent and puts out some of the most outstanding 12”s in the scene. Die Brucke is one of my fave Pev joints the techy influence is brilliant. The synths are out there and hypnotic, where Peverelist really nails it though are in the drums, his beat programming is something else.

Made Up Sound – Density [Sub Solo]

Made Up Sound aka 2562 who featured so prominently in my first dubstep mix and pretty much pushed me into the genre, spanks out what I can only discrube as a freakin’ master stroke of techno / dubstep cross pollination. I had to pitch this up somewhat to fit the tempo, but you could play this in a techno set just as easily as a dubstep one and not really notice. The skipping drums funk the techno groove up so much, it’s like the old days of techno in Detroit all over again, the groove just propels forward and and takes you and the floor with it. Made Up Sound needs to stick out an album as the 2562 one was just brilliant.

Kontex – Plumes [Immerse]

Full circle we come back to Kontex, this one is a slow slow sub sonic dub techno, 4 to the floor number but I pitched it up like 19 % or something stupid on my super powered decks (this is all vinyl by the way). Plumes is deeps as fuck and just a perfect slab of dub techno that will mix into anything from the slowest electronica all the way up to the 140 bpm dubstep I have on show here, I would mix it with techno too if I was slipping it in here. A Ramadanman mix of this is dropping soon for people without super pitch capabilities.

Komonazmuk – Bad Apple [Hench]

Bad Apple is a dubstep passed techno bomb the beats are 4x4 and driving yet the groove some how has that swing to it that a good steppa just loves and feels in their bones. I really like this track, it’s featured on Appleblim’s Dubstep Allstars Vol.6 and is somewhat instrumental in pushing the sound on me since I was familiar with mixing techno and house before I found this sound…

Shackleton – El Din (Part One) [Mordant Music]

This is some of the newest Shackleton stuff around and my oh my its good, but what would you expect from the Skull Disco founder hey? It’s so deep and so dark with that old skool vibe to it, yet it’s so forward thinking that it’s just on another level. He is just doing his own thing and what a thing it is too, melodic strings drone away in a far east kind of style while the bass and drums rattle away like a dark dance floor shaker… Oh yeah ignor the beat clashing shit mix into this one if you will…

Digital Mystikz – Misty Winter [Soul Jazz]

To close the mix off and flow on from the mood Shack brought to the table I could only really go for Digital Mystikz really. I would have closed on Shack but I like to throw in an old surprise if I can to get the heads excited. This old Soul Jazz 12” is Mala and Coki at their best mixing mad rhythms with HUGE bass and pure soulful vibes. I read in an interview that this is one of Burial’s top tunes of all time and who is going to argue with that?!? Not me that’s for sure…

So that’s it, it fades to grey and you have been listening to my selection of the deepest / finest dub kuts I could string together. I hope you enjoyed it and had a good read through about all the amazing music, big up to all the artists and labels featured on the mix it really wouldn’t have been possible without your skills, beats and vibes.

I’m working on my next mix so keep your eyes and ears peeled for that on this very blog or the mix section of dubstepforums and the boards of Drowned in Sound where I like to hang when I can. It’s going to be wicked, I’m excited already.

Project Twisted Mayhem

This is the new exclusive up and coming event, and I don’t say the word event lightly, that I am involved with as DJ and general ideas man with Ron the brains behind the project and super human DJ Pauly P who writes Balearic Skirmish. We want to get a night of the ground where we can spin tunes and get bands involved to make a night of pure musical mayhem. We are genre spanners and like to spin pretty much anything from old skool house, italo, funk and hip-hop with a splashing of funk’n’breaks to the more beastly end of the dance spectrum with techno, electro, minimal and dubstep… if I accidentally go to the dark side, hell I will even drop some ‘indie’, jazz and rock if the mood takes me.

Right now we are just getting it off the ground, venues are being found, interest is being gauged, facebook groups are being made. And this is where I ask you lovely people for some help…

Join our Project Twisted Mayhem group boost our numbers download our mix, yeah that’s right we have a promo mix but more about that in a little while. Join the group and see what we are up to, which in turn will get us some kudos in helping push the idea to venues and all that good stuff.

We want to party and take you with us.

This mix is a promo for the night and it’s a stone cold cracker by Pauly P my partner in crime on the one’s and two’s. He has whipped out an eclectic one for this mix, now don’t let The Ting Tings put you off, or in-fact MGMT I know you indie pose like to throw abuse but hell he mashes them up real good into this session. The Dueling Bongos track is a version of the Deliverance squeal piggy banjo battle on you guessed it percussion only it’s phat. He funks up and loops some sweet Flava and the mix really gets the Asses moving with some deep and sexy house, italo, and electro groves. The dude is blessed on the decks, it’s a journey from now on with hit after hit. The hypnotic dance off with only relent by the time you get the dream pop of Air France locked in the mix and by then it’s to damn late you are hooked, Cindy comes round with her cosmic pop and the funk ridden wind down is in effect. If this mix doesn’t move you hell I’m not sure what will. Download it now and join our group.

Expect more goodies no doubt in the near future I mean I haven’t even done a promo mix yet but you can expect a deep and dark vibe from that when I get it cooking, but then if you are reading my blog you might already know my style. Check it after the drop…

Jimi The Exploder Presents: Lo-Fi-Tronic

I did this mix about a month ago and have decided to share it with you as it has some grate tunes on it. Here is a track-by-track description of the mix-tape style compilation that you can download at the bottom of the post. Its 1 hour 19 mins 45 sec’s of pure joy for your ears, perfect for the summer time on your mp3 player or burned onto a CD. Also go and check out all the artists I have found links for you to do just that, its all for the love of music.

Final Fantasy & Ed Droste - Possibly Maybe
This is a cover version of the Bjork song by the ace Final Fantasy and a member of Grizzly Bear, it’s a beautiful violin and beat combo that brings the mix-tape in with style and atmosphere. You can find the tune on
Stereogum on a Bjork tribute album for free.

Youthmovies – Cannulae
This is one of my favourite songs on Youthmovies debut album Good Nature. It’s a beautiful post-rock, indie ballad, deep house textured math tune. The thumping beat reminds me of old school house which brings me to…

Jungle Wonz - Bird In A Gilded Cage
This gem by Marshall Jefferson has a wonderful synth base line that reminds me of Voodoo Ray, yet pre-dates that by some time. It’s a deep jungle sampling tune that reminds me why I love house music so much.

Aphex Twin – Bbydhyonchord
I always mean to put this tune on mix-tapes yet forget, so I rectified that this time. It’s also a good bridge from the old school house, with its tribal style electro drums and sad moldy, to the noise section of the mix.

Fuck Buttons - Sweet love For Planet Earth
This is my favourite track from the album Street Horrrsing, it stands out a mile with its epic fuzz and growl. The tinkling melody draws you in even further to this hypnotic beast.

Rolo Tomassi - C Is For Drowning Under Waves Of Listless Apathy (Ornie Remix)
Rolo Tomassi are one of my favourite new bands, their so young and so talented. This is a remix that is on the end of their EP. It’s a scary schizophrenic almost funky bit of noise that has to be heard to be believed. For some reason this reminds me of G-Funk hip-hop.

Matmos - Rainbow Flag
This is the start of my lo-fi dance floor section. Matmos just use keyboards right into a computer and make some good stuff. This tune was found on Pitchfork as a free download and has stuck in my head since. I don’t really know too much about them to comment further.

Oh Astro - Journey To The Centre
I believe this was another Pitchfork find, and again I don’t know much about them. But this tune is a beautiful loop ridden stomper of a lo-fi-tronic persuasion, brilliant for driving round to in the sunshine.

The Mae-Shi - Kingdom Come
Officially declared the most fun band in all the land on this very blog, see my live review for amazing scenes and details. This is from their album “HLLLYH” and it is the disco centre piece in this amazing party record filled with spazzed out punk and lo-fi electronics, more of this stuff later in the mix too.

Cluster – Caramel
I stumbled upon this tune on a mix by Klaxons and fell in love with it. It sounds like a really old electro number with irresistible synths and melodies. Wonderful stuff.

Seventeen Evergreen - Ensoniq (Bi Polar Men Refix)
This is an almost dub-step slanted electro break-beat tune. I have been spinning it quite a lot since I found it in the middle of last year some time. This brings my lo-fi-tronic dance floor section to an end.

Forward,Russia! - We Are Grey Matter
Now we start to bring songs to the dance floor with actual words and passion. We Are Grey Matter is a tune from Forward Russia’s new album Life Processes. I love the fat drum beat in a 4x4 tempo and the way it builds into a mathed out rock tune.

!!! - Heart Of Hearts
Well !!! are a party band that make excellent dance music out of a bit mad band. Heart Of Hearts is my stand out track from last years amazing Myth Takes album. It reminds me of 90s dance done by an indie band, but in a good way.

Why? - These Few Presidents
I start to bring things to a close by slowing the pace a down with some Why? This is a brilliant tune from their recent album Alopecia. The lyric ‘Yours is a funeral I would fly to from anywhere’ gets me every time. It’s a catchy slice of hip-hop infused geeky indie pop.

MGMT - Time To Pretend
Now for the anthems to really hammer the mix home, with the closes I get to an indie sing along. This song reminds me of Flaming Lips and with good reason as their producer helped them out with it. Its also a brilliant indie pop tune for the summer time. Makes me think of the closing segment of this years Skins series too, and I have a soft spot for that show.

The Mae-Shi - Run To Your Grave
I had to finish with The Mae-Shi because I just love them so much. Run To The Grave is just a perfect song in my opinion I can’t get enough of it and it could well be one of the songs of the year. If it got more play it would get well into the sub-conscious of the music buying public. Run, Run, Run To Your Grave!

That’s the end of the mix-tape, I did it all on
Audacity with the slightest of editing together, I just wanted the tunes to flow and speak for them selves. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Go and buy the music of these amazing artists if you find something you love.

Jimi The Exploder – Fucked Up Face (Film Mix)

This is my most successful digital DJ mix, I’m use to spinning records on the old ones and twos, but for this I decided to try something on my laptop. It came out really good and has been a hit with my friends. Its inspired by some of my favourite films or songs from them. Other songs I just liked so much I put them in anyway, maybe one day they will be in a film. The mixing is minimal so I could let the songs talk for them selves. I hope you enjoy it.
